Self Managed Abortion

Self-managed abortion (SMA) is safe and effective way to end a pregnancy, if one has accurate information about how to use abortion pills and can ask questions. People may choose to self-manage an abortion because it is difficult to get to an abortion clinic or because they prefer to self-induce their abortion on their own. In many states the law requires that abortion pills be given by licensed health care clinicians, and a person who uses abortion pills that were not obtained through a clinician may face criminalization.

Misoprostol, used alone or in combination with Mifepristone, is a safe and effective way to end a pregnancy in the first 12 weeks- the M+A Hotline has detailed instructions on how to use abortion pills. It is approved by the World Health Organization as a safe abortion method for use with or without a clinician and has been used successfully by millions of people around the world.

Whether looking up information on SMA resources (or getting abortion care at a clinic), it’s important to remember to keep one’s research about abortion private. Someone’s reasons for wanting information about abortion is nobody’s business.

SASS is the US project of Women Help Women, a global nonprofit organization that supports the rights of people around the world to have information about and access to safe abortion with pills. Information is power. We all deserve accurate information about our bodies and reproductive health.
